Composition at Bowdoin

Composition and interest in new music has long been a Bowdoin tradition, with visitors like composer Pauline Oliveros and new music group Flexible Music a regular feature of campus life. Students interested in composition typically start with our music theory courses, which emphasize writing original pieces. Our composer Vineet Shende offers Introduction to Composition every year, and courses in Electronic Music and Orchestration every other year. Students typically take independent studies to advance their skills, and some do Honors theses in composition.  All composition courses, independent studies, and honors projects culminate in a concert of the students' work, and in the case of honors projects these are often performed by professional musicians.
