Frank Carlberg's "Monk Dreams, Hallucinations, and Nightmares"

Monk Dreams, Hallucinations, & Nightmares, the new large ensemble project from Frank Carlberg, draws its inspiration from the luminous work of Thelonious Monk. The pieces generate their shapes from splinters, cells and feelings found in and around Monk's music, as well as from his verbal utterances, advice and cryptic observations.
The Helsinki-born, NYC-based pianist and composer Frank Carlberg has become well-known to Maine audiences over the last few decades through regular performances in Portland, collaborations with beloved drummer Steve Grover, and his long-running relationship with the Maine Jazz Camp.

Cassatt String Quartet with George Lopez, piano

The widely-acclaimed Manhattan-based ensemble will perform Beethoven's String Quartet in Eb Major, the full premiere of Prof. Vineet Shende's String Quartet No. 2 in Raag Ahir-Bhairav, a work that seeks to synthesize the worlds of Western and Indian Classical Music, and Dvorak's Piano Quartet No. 2 in A Major, Opus 81, with Bowdoin's Beckwith artist-in-residence, George Lopez.

Usman Khan, sitar

Ustad Usman Khan was born into a life of music. A sixth generation musician, third-generation sitar master and the grandson of Ustad Rehmat Khan (who in the 19th century codified the sitar into its modern-day form), he received tutelage starting at the age of six from his father, Ustad Abdul Karim Khan of Dharwad. He is known for his emotional interpretations and for combining vocal and instrumental techniques on the sitar. He has toured widely throughout India and in France, Germany, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Australia, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, South Korea, and the U.S and Canada.

Bowdoin Chamber Choir

Middle Eastern Ensemble

The Bowdoin Middle Eastern Ensemble, directed by Eric LaPerna and Amos Libby, will present classical and contemporary music from the Arabic and Ottoman Turkish traditions.  The ensemble performs on traditional Middle Eastern musical instruments like the oud (Middle Eastern lute) and qanun (72-stringed Middle Eastern zither) as well vocals and Western instruments along with Middle Eastern percussion.

Maestro Gualajo

For his skill and mastery in the interpretation of the Afro-Colombian Marimba de Chonta, Jose Antonio Torres Solis is known as "Maestro Gualajo" or the "Pianist of the Jungle." Maestro Gualajo is accompanied by Irlando "Maky" Lopez (percussionist, founder of the legendary Grupo Naidy and former dancer with Los Bogas del Paci­fico); his son and musical heir Jayer Torres; veteran cantadora (traditional singer) Gladys "Titi" Bazan, and Boston University Professor of Ethnomusicology Michael Birenbaum Quintero.

West African Music Ensemble

The Bowdoin College Orchestra will present a wonderfully lyrical program of works including Dvorak's "New World" Symphony. The concert will feature seniors Hanna Renedo and August Posch performing the slow movement of Brahms' Double Concerto for Violin and Cello; Kelvin Guo playing the Allegro affettuoso movement from Schumann's Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 54; and Scout Gregerson soloing in Faure's Pavane.

Composers include Alexander Alexandrov, Vissarion Shebalin and Nikolai Golovanov. The featured work is Sergei Prokofiev's Alexander Nevsky Cantata (1938) with mezzo-soprano soloist Joelle Morris.

Pieces will include works by John Cage, Keigo Fujii, Ken Ueno, and Bowdoin Associate Professor of Music Vineet Shende's Carnatic Preludes, after J.S. Bach.
