Teatime Concert: The Radnofsky Quartet and John McDonald, guest pianist-composer

Tillotson Room, Gibson Hall
A band of extraordinarily gifted saxophonists from the New England Conservatory, led by their mentor Kenneth Radnofsky, will be joined by John McDonald, director of music at Tufts University. Their program will include music by McDonald, Elliott Schwartz, and Pulitzer-Prize winning composer Charles Wuorinen.
Garmarna and Hurdy Gurdy
Wednesday, September 21, at 7:30 p.m.
Kresge Auditorium, Visual Arts Center
Garmarna, a group of four young Swedish musicians, has a unique sound: firmly based in Swedish traditional music but influenced by the rock tradition with which they grew up. The music is half newly-composed and half traditional. At this concert they will be joined by a Swedish hurdy-gurdy duo.
Teatime Concert: Sylvia Smith Percussion Duo
Friday, September 23, at 4:00 p.m.

Sylvia Smith and Ayano Kataoka, marimba, will perform the percussion and theater music of Maine native Stuart Saunders Smith.
Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra
Thursday, September 29, at 7:30 p.m.
Orion Performing Arts Center, Mt. Ararat Middle School, Topsham
The 100-piece classical symphony orchestra from Guangzhou, China, will visit Maine following their performances at Carnegie Hall and Boston’s Symphony Hall. Under the direction of Long Yu, the orchestra will be joined by guest violinist Augustin Dumay, and Peking opera singer Shuai Ma.
“An Angel’s Voice: The Legend of Farinelli”
Saturday, October 1, at 3:00 p.m.
Bowdoin College Chapel
Farinelli, the great 18th-Century castrato, was the most sensational singer of his time, enjoying superstar status in his day. Derek Lee Ragin, today one of the world’s foremost countertenors, famous as the “voice” of Farinelli in the Italian film of the same name, will sing a spectacularly virtuosic program of Baroque music, including works by Handel, Porpora, Telemann and Vivaldi. The accomplished ensemble Rebel will accompany him on authentic instruments.

The renowned performers will join together at Bowdoin for a concert including works by Mozart, Stravinsky, Tartini and Fauré.

Aniruddha Knight and Ensemble “Bharata Natyam” – Dance and Music of South India

Knight is a ninth generation performer from one of India’s most distinguished families of professional musicians and dancers, and is the only grandson of the world-famous T. Balasaraswati. In the tradition of his family, he is both a musician and a dancer, and he shares with his accompanists an understanding of the integration of music with dance that is unique to the style he inherited from his mother, Lakshmi Knight, Balasaraswati’s daughter and principal student.

Anthony Antolini ’63 and Roland Vazquez will lead the Chorus and orchestra in J.S. Bach’s Cantata #140: Wachet auf! ruft uns die Stimme and other works.
John Pizzarelli Quartet
Friday, November 18, at 7:30 p.m.

John Pizzarelli has cultivated a winning career by singing classic standards and late-night ballads, and by playing sublime and inventive guitar. Using greats like Nat “King” Cole and Frank Sinatra and the songs of writers like Sammy Cahn and Jimmy Van Heusen as touchstones, Pizzarelli is among the prime revivalists of the great American songbook, bringing to his work the cool jazz flavor of his brilliant guitar playing. Admission is free of charge, but tickets must be reserved prior to 5:00 PM on November 17th by calling or visiting the Smith Union Information Desk (207-775-3375).

Under the direction of Robert K. Greenlee, the Chamber Choir will perform music of the Spanish Renaissance, including works by Victoria, Morales, Flecha, Encina, and anonymous music from the Cancionero musical de palacio, as well as American folk music.
