Weekend Service Trips

Weekend Service

With ever increasing student interest in community immersion and service programs like the McKeen Center's Pre-Orientation and Alternative Spring Break trips, the Center launched the weekend service trip program in the fall of 2009.  This program offers students a unique opportunity to venture off campus for a few days, immerse themselves in a new community, engage in direct service, and learn about different areas of Maine.

Spring 2012 Weekend Service Trips!

Unless otherwise noted, trips have a $10 participation fee. Sign up is first come first serve. E-mail Jess Caron '13 to reserve your spot.

Volunteer with Mano en Mano, a non-profit organization in Milbridge, ME that advocates for social justice and works with diverse populations in Down East Maine to provide affordable housing, educational opportunities, and better access to health and social services. The group will work at their annual Spring Fling fundraiser dinner. The trip leaves Saturday morning and returns Sunday afternoon.

Grafton, New Hampshire

Friday, April 13 - Saturday, April 14

Travel to Grafton, a small town in Western New Hampshire, and help preserve a historic, one-room schoolhouse. The group will work with students from Dartmouth College to paint and renovate the building. The trip leaves Friday afternoon and returns Saturday evening.

The Carpenter’s Boat Shop

Friday, April 20 – Saturday, April 21

The Carpenter’s Boat Shop is an apprenticeship-school for people negotiating transitions in their lives. Spend the weekend learning about the organization and cutting a new trail from the Boat Shop through the woods. The group will leave Friday afternoon and return Saturday evening.

How to Get More Involved

All of the weekend service trips are student initiated and student-led. The McKeen Center is always looking for trip participants and trip leaders.  If you are interested in participating in or proposing a weekend service trip, please contact Jess Caron '13 for more information.
