Albert L. Babcock, M.D. '48

Citation for Albert L. Babcock, 1993 Common Good Award recipient.

"Albert Babcock, Bowdoin College is proud to honor you during this bicentennial year for your exceptional service to the common good.

A specialist in plastic and reconstructive surgery, you entered the medical field so that you could be of help to others.  You have done so by your extensive volunteer medical service to the disadvantaged, both in places far away and within your own community.  As one of your colleagues has said of you, "The tremendous good that Dr. Babcock has accomplished is immeasurable and serves as a definite manifestation of his inherent desire to provide meaningful and caring service for all patients."

Since the early 1970s, you have donated your professional service to Project Hope, providing surgical care to people in need in remote areas of North Africa and Tunisia for two months in 1970 and for a similar period of time along the Amazon River in Brazil in 1973.  Continuing the work of Project Hope through your association with Esperanca, Inc., you have returned to Brazil for two-week periods six more times -- in 1977, 1980, 1982, 1986, 1990, and most recently in 1992.  For this commitment you have been justly honored by Esperanca.  It is now Bowdoin's honor to recognize your sustained commitment to health and human dignity by presenting you with one of its highest honors, the Common Good Award."
