Nina Scheepers (Chemistry and Environmental Studies) was born in Cape Town, South Africa and went to high school in San Diego, CA. She first got involved with the McKeen Center through the America Reads and Counts tutoring program in local schools and the mentoring program at Mt. Ararat High School.
After her first year, Nina applied for a Global Citizens Grant and was awarded the funding to go work in South Africa for an educational non-profit, Imagine Scholar. She has gone on to developed her love of the outdoors by completing Leadership Training with the Bowdoin Outing Club and becoming one of the BOC co-presidents. For two years Nina was the student coordinator for the BOC Orientation program.
Academically, Nina has fostered her interest in the local community by conducting a community based independent study in Chemistry. She is working with Assistant Professor Soren Eustis and sampling local water supplies to look at the dissolved organic matter content and its implications for attenuation of contaminants.
This year Nina is the McKeen Fellow for the Global Citizens Grant.
After graduating this May, Nina will be working with UNUM in Portland, ME.
