Started in the fall of 2009 by Krista Bahm ’11 with the support of the McKeen Center, Weekend Service Trips allow students to explore Maine and learn more about various communities in Maine through service. This past fall, students on Weekend Service Trips spent fall break at Morris Farm, helped with various tasks at the Carpenter’s Boat Shop, and volunteered at the Cobscook Community Learning Center in Downeast Maine. For many students, Weekend Service Trips provide a productive way to get off of campus, allow students to learn about other parts of Maine, and often foster a deeper connection to service and the McKeen Center once the students return to Bowdoin.
The weekend before spring break, a group of nine students ventured up to Milbridge, ME, where they volunteered at Mano en Mano, a non-profit led by Ian Yaffe ’09 that works to provide educational services, healthcare, and low-income housing to Latino immigrant farmers in Downeast Maine.
