Common Good Grant Committee Solicits Proposals

The Bowdoin College student-run Common Good Grant Committee is pleased to request proposals from community organizations for this year's grant.  Now in its 12th year, the Common Good Grant provides over $10,000 each year to local non-profits that serve the greater Brunswick community.

With the goal of supporting current programs and funding new initiatives that serve local communities, the grant is made possible by an anonymous donor interested in providing Bowdoin students the opportunity to learn about philanthropy while developing relationships with non-profit organizations and local communities. Grant proposals will be reviewed and selected on a competitive basis by the Common Good Grant Committee, a group of twelve Bowdoin students advised by the staff of the McKeen Center for the Common Good. An additional group of students will be raising funds to further the impact of the Grant Program while learning the important skills of community fund raising. In the past, the students serving on the Development Committee have increased the grant base by as much as 80 percent.

Local non-profits that serve the greater Brunswick area (Brunswick, Harpswell, Georgetown, Phippsburg, Freeport, Topsham, Bath, Bowdoinham, Woolwich, Lisbon, Lisbon Falls, Bowdoin, and Yarmouth) are invited to apply. 

The 2011-2012 Common Good Grant recipients included the American Cancer Society, Bath Housing Development Corporation, Brunswick Topsham Land Trust, the Center for Therapeutic Recreation, the Neighborhood Café, Tedford Housing, Tri-County Literacy, Volunteers of America, and Maine Centers for Women, Work and Community.

Grant proposals should be submitted to the Common Good Grant Committee at the McKeen Center for the Common Good, postmarked by Friday, February 1, 2013.  During the week of February 25, all applicants will be told whether or not their grant application has progressed to the final round.  Common Good Grant committee members will set up a brief site visit with all finalists during the week of March 4 or March 25.  The finalists will be notified of funding decisions on or before Tuesday, April 2.  Final grants will be awarded on Tuesday, April 9, at Bowdoin’s Common Good Grant Awards Ceremony.  This grant is intended for use during the time period between April 9, 2013 and April 9, 2014.

A free, optional grant-writing workshop provided by the College for organizations interested in applying for the Common Good Grant will be held on Friday, January 11, 2013 from 1:00 to 4:00 pm in Lancaster Lounge in Moulton Union on the Bowdoin campus.  This is an informational workshop and participation has no bearing on grant decisions.  Participants should bring a one-page sample or draft to the workshop.
