Over the sunny Fall Break weekend, Javier Ake '14, Kelsey Berger '15, Primo Garza '12, Hanni Haynes '15 and Lena Midney '12 headed to Morris Farm in Wiscasset, Maine, for a three-day service trip. The 60–acre farm is not only a functional farm but is also an educational resource for the community to learn about sustainable agriculture. During a weekend service trip to the farm last spring, a group of Bowdoin students prepared five plots of land for the Morris Farm-Wiscasset Primary School Garden.
This year's group tackled three tasks: painting and sanding the window sashes in the barn, waterproofing the window casings, and weeding the front yard. Amid the work, the group managed to squeeze in a hike, a birthday celebration, and a trip to the Damariscotta Pumpkin Festival, where they watched the Pumpkinboat Regatta. And while the students didn't know each other when the trip started, trip leader Lena Midney, said, "The group shared a camaraderie — even within a few hours."
The next Weekend Service Trip will travel to Lubec, ME to work with the Cobscook Community Learning Center, Nov 4 & 5.
