Posted September 13, 2010

Before his first-year classes had even begun Chanwoong Baek '12 became involved with the McKeen Center through his Community Immersion Pre-O trip to North Haven. He soon followed up that experience by participating in Common Good Day and has done so each subsequent year.

As a sophomore Chanwoong served as one of two student leaders at Harpswell Island Mentoring where he mentored elementary school students through performance arts. He participated in Alternative Winter Break '09 at Preble Street in Portland. Preble Street is a comprehensive center for people experiencing homelessness founded by Bowdoin Alum, Mark Swann '84.

In March of 2010, Chanwoong participated in an Alternative Spring Break trip to South Carolina. On this trip he worked with students in under-served rural and urban schools in South Carolina to remove barriers to higher education - observing and participating in classrooms at Baptist Hill High School and Greg Mathis Charter High School.

In his Bowdoin career thus far, Chanwoong has also spent time volunteering at both Tedford Housing and the Brunswick Teen Center, both local nonprofit organizations
