New Program: Weekend Service Trips

Story posted December 09, 2009

The weekend service trip program, a new initiative this year, offers students a unique opportunity to venture off campus to immerse themselves in a new community while doing service.  This semester the first two weekend service trips brought students to North Haven and Camp Sunshine.

Over fall break in October, a group of 8 students traveled to North Haven, an island community in Penobscot Bay, to learn more about island life in Maine and to assist with community projects.  Students spent the weekend working on the island's affordable housing site, fixing the school's playground and organizing the community center.

In November a group of students spent the weekend volunteering at Camp Sunshine.  Located on the shores of Sebago Lake, the camp has retreat sessions throughout the year for children with life-threatening illnesses and their families.  The camp is run almost entirely by volunteers who help with arts and crafts, play with kids in the "tot lot", meet with parents and medical experts, partner one on one with children, and organize sports with the teens.  Students plan to return to Camp Sunshine in February.
