Upon graduating from Bowdoin, Chris Knight decided he was ready to completely immerse himself in public service. He enrolled in the AmeriCorps*VISTA program via a placement at Year Up in Boston. AmeriCorps*VISTA is a national service program that provides full-time placements to help build non-profit organizations that fight poverty. Year Up equips urban young adults to reach their potential in professional careers and higher education, and Chris focuses on recruiting applicants from the Boston area.
Chris’s coursework and service led him to understand how he could turn his academic interests and service into a career. He served on the Common Good Grant Committee, led an Alternative Spring Break trip, organized the Community Immersion Pre-Orientation trip, and participated in three community-based academic courses. “Being exposed to others serving the common good gave me a glimpse into that world and helped me understand how I could tie my talents, career goals, and desires into one fulfilling career.”
“Because of Bowdoin's commitment to the common good, I was able to tailor my in-class and extracurricular education around my desire to serve.”
