Post-Doctoral Fellow, Department of Mathematics, Fall 2015

The Department of Mathematics at Bowdoin College invites applications for two one-year Post-Doctoral Fellow positions starting Fall 2015. Preference will be given to applicants who appreciate the rich interplay of theoretical mathematics, applied mathematics, and statistics supported and encouraged by our department. One of the successful applicants will teach a course in mathematical statistics; thus, evidence of statistics background or teaching experience is welcome.  Bowdoin values a strong commitment to research and a promise of successful scholarly engagement as well as a dedication to teaching excellence in a liberal arts environment. The teaching load is three courses per year. Completion of requirements for Ph.D. expected by time of the appointment.

It is important to set out by mentioning emphatically that the department of mathematics at Bowdoin College---blessed by strong students, a well-qualified and devoted faculty, and good physical resources---enjoys a position of considerable strength…

… First, we want to praise the department for its collegiality and for its good disposition to work with one another. For example, whereas faculty in far too many other colleges have constructed artificial divides between pure and applied mathematics (and/or between mathematics and statistics) ... the mathematics faculty at Bowdoin have correctly construed these sub-disciplines as complementary threads of the same fabric and have put together a balanced curriculum that affords better opportunities for Bowdoin students. This curriculum favorably distinguishes the department from many of its peers. A notable example of the willingness to work together within and across departments is the ongoing development of the aforementioned program in biomathematics.
