Things you should know:
If you decide to bring a computer to Bowdoin College there are a few things think about. There are certain hardware requirements that a computer needs in order to access network services (i.e. Internet, FTP, File Storage). Both Macintosh and PC computers can be used at Bowdoin. Connecting to the Network: Computers must have an Ethernet card in order to connect to our network. If you connect to a cable-modem at home, you probably already have an Ethernet card. If you are unsure, consult the documentation that came with your computer. If you do not have an Ethernet card, they are available for purchase from Information Technology. You may decide to purchase a wireless network card that will connect to wireless access points located around campus.
Modems: Modems do not work in Bowdoin phone jacks. Bowdoin uses a digital phone system. Plugging a modem into a phone jack at Bowdoin could damage both the jack and your modem.
Free Software: Bowdoin provides students with an assortment of site-licensed software including the most recent version of Microsoft Office Professional for both PC and Macintosh computers. Students will be able to obtain the media for this software when they arrive and after they have signed the Microsoft student license agreement. The software will be available from Information Technology.
Laptop vs. Desktop: One decision to make is whether to bring a laptop or a desktop computer. The primary benefit of a laptop is portability. A laptop can be carried to the library for research or home on breaks. Portability combined with a wireless network card give students the ability to use their computer almost anywhere on campus. Desktops are less portable than laptops. The benefits of a desktop are cost, full-size keyboard, and larger monitor. Either a desktop or a laptop will be an effective tool for schoolwork, communication and recreation.
Computer Labs: If you do not bring a computer there are many public computer labs around campus including one 24-hour lab. Labs have both Macintosh and PC computers and are equipped with laser printers. Learn more about our labs.
Helpdesk: Bowdoin College has a Student Help Desk staffed by students, for students 7 days/week during the academic year. It can help students with a variety of problems including software questions, network problems and virus infections. The Student Help Desk supports both Macintosh and PC computers. They can be contacted at 721-5050 or studenthelpdesk@bowdoin.edu during the academic year.
