Register a Wireless Card

Before a computer can access wireless network services you will need to register the address of your wireless card at mymail.bowdoin.edu

What is a physical address? A physical address, also known as a MAC (not related to Macintosh Computers), Airport ID, network or hardware address, is a series of 12 letters and numbers, usually separated into 6 groups by dashes or colons. This address is unique to each network card and is usually printed directly on the card itself.

wireless on windowsIf you use Windows, you may be able to determine your physical address by following these steps:

  • Click the "Start" button and select "Run..."
  • Type "cmd" and hit enter. This will open the Command Prompt.
  • In the window that pops up, type "ipconfig /all" and hit enter
  • If you have a wireless card, its properties will show up under the heading "Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection". Your physical address should be listed as one of those properties

wireless address on a macintoshIf you use a Macintosh, you may be able to determine your physical address by looking at the Network settings in your System Preferences. On Apple's Airport cards, the physical address is called the Airport ID.
