Did you ever wonder what IT people do all summer? During the month of July and August, over 200 computers were delivered and setup around campus. Most of these computers were part of the 4 year computer replacement cycle, while others were CAP-funded computers or part of lab upgrades. Computers were inventoried, and utilizing our Altiris management software, IT staff spent much of June prepping the computers for deployment. This method reduces the amount of time that IT staff spend on each computer setup appointment, as software is already installed by the time the computer is delivered to the end-user.
While PCs were in the majority this summer, we have continued to see a trend of users opting to transition to the Mac platform. In addition to computers, IT staff also setup specialized software, large format scanners, monitors, and upgraded many computers …

As the demand for data storage and system management increases, new technologies must be used to maximize storage while reducing energy use and management costs. In response to this trend, we are replacing large rack-mounted servers with compact Blade servers, which use reduce overall energy usage and allow for greater flexibility in our data center. One new Blade server uses 6.5 times less electrical power and provides 40-50 times the computing capacity than the servers it replaced …
