Access your files on the microwave

All faculty, staff, and students have access to a personal drive, a departmental drive (for faculty and staff), and a common drive.  Access to these drives travels with you enabling you to access your files from any computer on campus.  When you log into any Bowdoin-owned office or lab machine, your drives should mount on your PC and/or Mac.

Note: These directions assume you are on a campus computer and that you initially logged into the computer you are working at. You must log in as yourself for the permissions to work correctly.

If you are on a non-Bowdoin computer and are asked to authenticate, type in your username@bowdoincollege.edu (e.g., jsmith@bowdoincollege.edu) and then your email password.

Access your personal drive:

PC users
Windows XP:  You can access your personal drive (H) by clicking on the Start menu and opening the "My Computer" window.  Your personal drive will be listed in the Network Drives section, (e.g., jbowdoin on 'microwave\it' (H:).

If your personal drive does not appear in My Computer, click on the Start menu and choose Run.  In the Open textbox, type\\microwave\home\username (e.g., \\microwave\home\jbowdoin).  Students, type \\microwave\home\username (e.g. \\microwave\home\jbowdoin).  Choose OK.

Windows 7:  Click on the Start button and click the  "Computer" link on the right hand column.  Your personal drive will be listed in the Network Location section, (e.g., jbowdoin on '\\microwave\home' (H:).

If your personal drive does not appear in Computer, click on the Start button and in the Search field,  type "\\microwave\home\username" (e.g., \\microwave\home\jbowdoin).  Students, type \\microwave\home\username (e.g. \\microwave\home\jbowdoin). 

Mac users:  If your personal drive does not appear on your Desktop, click on the Go menu and choose Connect to Server.  In the Server Address textbox, type smb://microwave/home/jbowdoin (e.g., smb://microwave/home/jbowdoin/).  Students, type smb://microwave/home/username/ (e.g., smb://microwave/home/jbowdoin/).  Choose Connect.  You will be prompted to login using your email username and password.  Your personal folder will open on your Desktop. NOTE: Your home folder will not directly mount on your desktop in newer versions of Mac OS X. You will see a HOME folder which you can open and then browse to your folder directly. In labs and classrooms an alias to your own folder is created automatically for you to simplify this process.

Access your departmental drive:

PC users
Windows XP:  You can access your departmental drive (J) by clicking on the Start menu and opening the "My Computer" window.  The Dept on 'Microwave' (J:) drive will be listed in the Network Drives section.  Open the departmental drive and navigate through the list of folders to your department and click on it to open it.

If the  departmental drive does not appear in My Computer, click on the Start menu and choose Run.  In the Open textbox, type\\microwave\dept\.  Choose OK.  A DEPT on microwave window will open.  Navigate through the list of folders to your department and click on it to open it.

If the  departmental drive does not appear in  Computer, click on the Start button and in the Search field, type "\\microwave\dept\".   A DEPT on microwave window will open.  Navigate through the list of folders to your department and click on it to open it.

Access the common (Scratch) drive:

PC users
Windows XP:  You can access the Scratch drive (S) by clicking on the Start menu and opening the "My Computer" window.  Scratch on 'Microwave' (S:) will be listed in the Network Drives section.

If the Scratch drive does not appear in My Computer, click on the Start menu and choose Run.  In the Open textbox, type\\microwave\scratch\.  Choose OK.  A SCRATCH on microwave window will open.  Drag and drop files and folders there to share.

Windows 7:  Click on the Start button and click on the "Computer" link.  Scratch on 'Microwave' (S:) will be listed in the Network Location section.

If the Scratch drive does not appear in Computer, click on the Start button and in the Search field, type "\\microwave\scratch\".   A SCRATCH on microwave window will open.  Drag and drop files and folders there to share.

Mac users:  If the Scratch drive does not appear on your Desktop, click on the Go menu and choose Connect to Server.  In the Server Address textbox, type smb://microwave/scratch/.  Choose Connect.  You will be prompted to login using your email username and password.  A scratch folder will open on your Desktop.  Drag and drop files and folders there to share.
