Access Your Files on Microwave

All faculty, staff, and students have access to a personal network space and departmental space (for faculty and staff).  Access to these spaces travels with you enabling you to access your files from any computer on campus.  When you log into any Bowdoin-owned office or lab machine, your network spaces should mount on your PC and/or Mac.

Note: These directions assume you are on a campus computer and that you initially logged into the computer you are working at. You must log in as yourself for the permissions to work correctly.

If you are on a non-Bowdoin computer and are asked to authenticate, type in your username@bowdoincollege.edu (e.g., jsmith@bowdoincollege.edu) and then your email password.

Access Your Personal Space:

PC users
Windows 7:

  • Click on the Start button and click the  "Computer" link on the right hand column.
  • Your personal network space will be listed in the Network Location section and mapped with a drive letter, (e.g., jbowdoin on '\\microwave\home' (H:).
  • If your personal network space does not appear in Computer, click on the Start button
  • In the Search field,  type "\\microwave\home\username" (e.g., \\microwave\home\jbowdoin)

Mac users:

  • If your personal network space does not appear on your Desktop, click on the Go menu
  • Choose Connect to Server
  • In the Server Address textbox, type smb://microwave/home/jbowdoin (e.g., smb://microwave/home/jbowdoin/)
  • Choose Connect
  • You will be prompted to login using your email username and password.  Your personal folder will open on your Desktop.
  • NOTE: Your home folder will not directly mount on your desktop in newer versions of Mac OS X. You will see a HOME folder which you can open and then browse to your folder directly. In labs and classrooms an alias to your own folder is created automatically for you to simplify this process.

Access Your Department's Network Space:

NOTE: All clients must be provided access to their department's network space after approval has been given. Access is not automatic. To request access, please fill out the file access request form.
