IT has created a custom installation of Outlook that is configured for Bowdoin e-mail accounts on our email server.
NOTE: this installation will work for college owned computers only.
Click on your Start menu and select Control Panel.
Click on the Add or Remove Programs link
Click on the Add New Programs link on the left panel of the window that appears
Select "Office 2003 Professional with Outlook" from the list on the right and click on the Add button.
The installation will take place automatically. A progress bar will appear and after several minutes, when the installation is done, another message will appear that says "Microsoft Office Professional Edition 2003 Setup completed successfully." Click on the OK button and close the "Add or Remove Programs" window.
Open Microsoft Outlook (Start > All Programs > Microsoft Office > Microsoft Office Outlook 2003).
The first time you launch Outlook on a Bowdoin pc, a Microsoft LDAP Directory window will appear. It should include your Bowdoin username. Next to the "Password: " field, type your email password and click on the OK button. Outlook will open to the Mail section and you should see all your email and folders waiting to use.
NOTE: These directions are dependent on a variety of settings in the Windows operating system and in Microsoft Office. If you have problems with the installation or configuration, we recommend using the "premium" Outlook web access client via Web Mail and Internet Explorer (web browser).
If you already have Outlook 2003 installed on your pc:
Check to see if you need to update to Service Pack 2. If you don't need to, then skip to "Configuring Outlook on a non-Bowdoin PC" (below).
If you do not already have Outlook 2003 installed on your computer, please follow these steps to install it:
Once Outlook is installed on your computer, you will need to update the software to "Service Pack 2" from Microsoft's website.
You will need to configure your e-mail settings before opening Outlook. The instructions for this process are below.
Once Outlook is installed, do not open it. Instead, open the Mail settings in the Control panel:
(Start > Control Panel > User Accounts > Mail).
You should see the "Mail Setup - outlook " window:

Click Email Accounts....
The "E-Mail Accounts Wizard" will launch and run through a series of windows:
At the first window, select Add a new e-mail account. Click Next >.

At the "E-mail Accounts/Server Type" window, select Microsoft Exchange Server. Click Next>.

A "Microsoft Exchange Server" window with the Bowdoin server name and your username will appear. Enter your username and e-mail password. For your username, use your_user_name@bowdoincollege.edu
(ex: tpeters2@bowdoincollege.edu). Click OK.

At the next "Microsoft Exchange Server" window that appears, select the Connection tab and select the option to "Connect to my Exchange mailbox using HTTP".
Click the "Exchange Proxy Settings..." button.

This will bring you to the "Exchange Proxy Settings" window.
In the first field, type "webmail.bowdoin.edu"
Check to make sure " Connect using SSL only" is checked.
Uncheck "On fast networks, connect using HTTP first, then connect using TCP/IP".
Check "On slow networks...etc."
Select "Basic Authentication" from the Proxy authentication settings pull down menu.

At the Congratulations screen, click on the Finish button.
Now that you have created your Outlook account, you need to specify the folder in which your e-mails will reside. Under the default setting, your e-mails may be copied and removed from the mail server to your personal computer. You do NOT want this to happen!
To prevent this, you will need to change your e-mail settings
BEFORE OPENING OUTLOOK.

Now you can open Microsoft Outlook (Start>Programs>Microsoft Office>Microsoft Outlook 2003).
You may be prompted to enter your e-mail password again.
Your e-mail should appear in your inbox upon opening the program and entering your password.
