Email Accounts: All Bowdoin employees are provided with an email address and an email account. The format for a Bowdoin email address consists of 8 characters beginning with the first initial of your first name followed by the first seven letters of your last name. If there are duplicate names, a number is added to the end of the address (e.g. bsmith4@bowdoin.edu). Call the IT Help Desk at ext. 3030 for assistance logging into an email account for the first time and directions for changing a password.
File Storage: A Microsoft File Services (MFS) account is created simultaneously with the Email account. When a computer is turned on, a logon window appears asking for a username and password. New employees must change their Email password before they can logon. Their email username and password will be used to logon to MFS. When employees logon to the Bowdoin College system they will have access to three drives; a personal drive, a department drive and a public drive. We recommend saving all work directly to MFS drives as they are backed up nightly and offer a more secure space for file storage.
Telephone: Telecommunications offers a digital telephone system complete with phonemail and numerous other system features. Before the new employee arrives, he or she will have received a new extension and can tap into voice mail options.
Electronic Calendar: The supported calendar software on campus is MeetingMaker. This software allows employees to access their calendar on or away from campus online at meetingmaker.bowdoin.edu. Please call the IT Help Desk at ext. 3030 to request a MeetingMaker account.
Computer Workstations: We want to make sure all employees who need a computer for their job have a working computer. If a new employee will be using a former employee's computer, it is important to remove all of the old files, profiles, and downloads. Please call the IT Helpdesk at ext. 3030 to schedule an appointment with a technician who will be happy to assist in setting up a new computer or cleaning up an existing computer.
Computer Software: Most of the computers on campus have site-licensed software installed on them. The software includes Microsoft Office Professional (Word, Excel, Access, Power Point, Publisher), Sophos Anti-Virus, MeetingMaker, Internet Explorer, Netscape 7, file compression and extraction software, Telnet and Adobe Reader. The new employee can requests additional software from the Help Desk at extension 3030.
Specialized Software: If there is a specific business application in your department like, FRS, ADABAS, or Ceridian, that the new employee needs access to, please call the IT Helpdesk at ext. 3030 to generate a work order.
