Thoughts on Learning Management System Symposium Event

Posted on October 27, 2006 8:13 PM

I spent last weekend at a NITLE Learning Management System Symposium, which had about 80 participants from 45 liberal arts colleges. It's always encouraging to leave the "Bowdoin bubble" and see how much we've accomplished and how most of our peers face similar challenges -- lowering the threshold so that online course tools are available to everyone while fostering the innovative use of technology for learning. Certainly the theme of content on the open web v. closed course systems recurred throughout the conference and is an important one for us to address. Several participants blogged throughout the conference; here are their posts. In my view, technologists can spend a lot of time and energy debating tools (Moodle v. Blackboard), but the important thing is to work with faculty to integrate online components into their courses and to provide a supportive environment that will allow them to incorporate the technology into their own pedagogy.

Mitch Davis:

I thought the open vs. closed web BB solution was being resolved. Was this project ever given a timeline?

It is good to get out and see what IT has accomplished while working in the Bowdoin Bubble.

Many technologists love technology to work and sometimes they get lost in their own solutions.
