On our first morning in Sri Lanka my group of new ISLE students sat on the veranda of the hotel surrounded by bright green hills and someone commented that it looked like we were on the island from the TV show LOST (a more relevant reference in 2006); that it looked like a smoke monster or even a dinosaur might pop its head up beside us. We were drinking Cokes out of glass bottles and everything seemed perfect and I thought about how I didn’t want to leave this hotel to move in with my host family …

ISLE Alumni Newsletter April 2012

Story posted April 23, 2012

Ayubowan!  I am sure you are all welcoming the spring that came a month early this year. Thanks to those who responded to our call, we are able to start a new feature, “the alumni of the month,” since last October.  This is a great way to inspire the prospective students as well as to share your news with your peers.  We are hoping that many of you volunteer to be “the alumni of the month.” As I mentioned in my last fall letter, we are still in the process of putting the ISLE Program on the US study abroad map.  The news from our ISLE Center is that some of our staff retired or are in the process of retiring.  After 30 years, Sumanasena has retired this last December.  I am sure you all will agree with me how it is difficult to replace Sumanasena as he set such high standards …

Ayubowan!  As this greeting says, we hope this finds you all in good spirits and sound health.  You will be happy to know our program is widening its network by recruiting students beyond our consortium of schools. Students from Amherst, Bard, Middlebury and Vassar were admitted for the 2011 and 2012 fall programs.  You have received the news of Flynn Jebb’s departure as Communications and Enrollment manager, and of Craig Hardt filling her position.  Flynn last year, and Craig this year, are on the road making connections with non-consortium schools.  But our alumni are also helping us in various ways: Alex Nosnik '02 and Kathryn Dearing '06 represented ISLE at the study abroad fair at Olin College.  Olin itself has Caitrin Lynch, an ISLE alumni as a faculty member …

Alumni Profile: Maggie Meyers, ISLE '04

Story posted November 03, 2011

Maggie Meyers, Bowdoin College, Class of 2005, ISLE Program ‘04                  I am currently in the Elementary Teacher Education Program (ELTEP) at the University of Washington in Seattle.  This is an intensive one year program through which I will get my certification to teach K-8.  I am student teaching in a first grade classroom at Jane Addams K-8 in Seattle, a very progressive school with and environmental science focus across the curriculum.  I am also about half way through my Master of Ed in Language, Literacy, and Culture through the Curriculum an Instruction division of UW.  When I'm not in classes, writing papers, or student teaching, I enjoy spending my time at home with my boyfriend Ari and 10 month old kitten named Moss.  Ari and I are both relatively new to Seattle, so we enjoy exploring different neighborhoods, frequent trips to the weekly farmers' markets, and walks around the lake that we live close to.  We have also enjoyed discovering local pubs where we can watch soccer (football) games on the weekends. The reasons I chose the ISLE Program: Unlike most candidates for the ISLE program, I had a big sister who had participated in the program about 5 years earlier.  I remember how fascinated I was with her stories about her Sri Lanka experience as well as the incredible textiles, artwork, and masks that she had returned home with.  Although I had already studied abroad during my junior year at the University of Padova, in Italy, I returned to Bowdoin with continued curiosity about Sri Lanka.  This curiosity was certainly heightened by the coursework I was pursuing at Bowdoin with John Holt that focused on Southeast Asian religious culture.   The foods I fell in love with: Where to begin?!?  My Amma, Manel Kulatunga, makes the most incredible dahl (pari-pu) that you can imagine.  We had some pretty fierce debates about whose Amma made the best dahl, but I still contend that mine made the most delicious version.  And the roti.....oh the coconut roti.  And pol sambul on top of well, everything.  And let's not forget kotu roti... the most amazing street food I've had in all my life.  In fact, during the 5 years I was living in NYC after I graduated from Bowdoin, I was lucky enough to have at my fingertips one of the only Sri Lankan restaurants in the country …

The 2011 Fall program is advancing nicely, the details of which you can view at this page.  Believe it or not, the Program will be thirty years old by 2012.  Two features will mark this year.  One is adding a spring semester program.  Precisely speaking, this is resuming the spring semester program that we ran on an experimental basis for two spring semesters in 2009 and 2010. The second feature, however, is more radical.  That is, the program is officially opening up to non-consortium members …
