2006 Program

We ask students each year for an evaluation of the program, and what kind of advice they would give to future students.

"Come prepared to have many of your basic
assumptions challenged about everything from
eating to religion. Remember that there are
few 'universal truths,' and that the
Western way isn't always the best way."

"To students who are coming, I would suggest bringing a laptop and an open mind. While you're in Sri Lanka, read some Michael Ondaatje, some Carl Muller, and some Leonard Woolf. Most importantly, just breath deep every day and let the experience fill you."

"Don't be shy to speak Sinhala right
away, even if it’s embarrassing,
because it'll be so helpful later.
Learn to laugh at the mistakes you
make, and appreciate the little things
that make Sri Lankan society unique
from the U.S. And do everything that
you get the opportunity to do, even
if you don't feel like it, because
it'll be worth it and you'll regret it
if you don't."

"I would say not to be apprehensive about living with a host family ...
I would imagine that there is a moment during every person's time here when they think, 'I need to tell the next batch how important the home-stay experience is.' It’s truly phenomenal. Your host family is the hand through which this country touches your heart."

"Remember that the cockroaches, ants, and most
spiders/other creatures are 'harmless fellows'
and embrace the fact that you will be living with
them on a daily basis. Appreciate your protective
host family and immerse yourself in their daily
life as much as possible. Greet every experience
with a smile and good humor, and talk as much
Sinhala as possible. "

"Just enjoy it ... it’s a great program and a wonderful experience."

"Before giving advice, I would say that I am supremely
jealous that they have the opportunity to be coming to
Sri Lanka for the first time. Then I would say,
make the most of it!"
