Surveys & Research

The Office of Institutional Research, Analytics & Consulting regularly surveys members of the Bowdoin community, including students, alumni, faculty, and staff on a variety of topics. Feedback gathered from surveys is used for institutional planning, reporting, and decision making.  Some surveys are specific to Bowdoin, while others are conducted in conjunction with peer institutions through different associations (COFHE, NESCAC, etc.) for benchmarking purposes.

Note that participation in all surveys at Bowdoin are voluntary. Survey data is strictly confidential. Individual identities are never disclosed.

Incoming First Year students are surveyed the summer before they arrive on campus. Students are asked about high school experiences, academic and personal preparedness for college, expectations for college, and values and goals. Prior to 2013, Bowdoin administered the CIRP Freshman survey which covered similar topics.

Conducted in the spring, students are asked about their faculty advising experience, their use of resources at Bowdoin, and their adjustment to college, including stress, time management, and friendships.  Students also rate their first year at Bowdoin and indicate whether they would attend Bowdoin again.

Senior Survey (annual)

The Senior Survey asks graduating seniors to reflect on their time at Bowdoin and provide feedback on their experience.  It covers academic and non-academic aspects of a liberal arts education. The survey includes questions about student satisfaction, engagement, growth in abilities and knowledge, involvement in college activities, and post-Bowdoin plans, including additional education (graduate school) and employment.

Alumni Surveys (annual)

In 2012, Bowdoin began surveying alumni who had graduated one, five and ten years prior. The surveys collect information about post-graduate careers and education. In addition, Alumni are asked about skills and abilities, balance and priorities in their lives, and opinions of Bowdoin.

Conducted in the spring, Sophomores are asked questions about advising and support, the use of on campus resources, course taking strategies and experiences, academic engagement, the major decision, community engagement, and diversity.

Bowdoin Experiences and Attitudes about Relationships and Sex (B.E.A.R.S.) Survey (every three years)

This survey is conducted to help Bowdoin better understand student experiences with relationships, sexual misconduct and sexual assault.  Topics covered include:  Community Attitudes and Behaviors, Relationships, Stalking and Harassment, Sexual Misconduct, Sexual Assault, and Telling and Reporting around incidents of assault.  Results are being used to develop programming to improve education and awareness, encourage greater reporting of incidents, and promote healthy relationships.

NESCAC Alcohol Survey (every three years)

In conjunction with other NESCAC schools, undergraduates were surveyed about alcohol use and the alcohol culture on campus.  Results were compared across institutions and used to develop programming, policies and services to further promote and safeguard student health and well-being at Bowdoin.

This survey is conducted to provide college health care providers and deans a better understanding of student health and well-being. Topics covered include: use of the Health Center and Counseling Services; Sleep, Diet & Exercise; use of Substances and Alcohol; Sexual Behavior; and General Health. Results are used to develop better services and programs to support the health and well-being of Bowdoin students.
