Bowdoin's First-Year Seminars place a strong emphasis on providing students the opportunity to explore a topic of interest while building their writing, critical reading, research and analytical skills within a small, seminar-style class. The purposes of research related to First-Year Seminars have been to learn how much writing students are doing in the seminars, the level of confidence students coming out of the seminars have in their writing ability and students' perceptions of seminar requirements and emphasis.
