Please read this summary of information about changes to the benefit plans, employee contributions, etc. BEFORE logging into HRforYOU to elect your benefits for 2014.

Your benefit elections will become effective as of January 1, 2014.

Bowdoin College Health Plan

  • Retain your ID card until your new ID card arrives in late 2013 or early 2014
    • NEW!! Professional or facility charges billed directly by a Preferred In-Network Provider will be subject to $100 individual/$200 family deductible.
    • NEW!!  The out-of-pocket calendar year limit will be $1,100 per individual/$2,200 per family. 
    • OA Centers for Orthopaedics office and physical therapy visit co-pays will remain at $15.
  • In-network benefits
    • NEW!!  The in-network deductible will increase from $400 per individual/$800 per family to $500 per individual/$1,000 per family. 
    • NEW!!  The co-pay for visits to specialists and urgent care will increase from $30 to $40.
    • NEW!!   The co-pay  for an emergency room visit will increase from $100 to $150.
    • The in-network  and out-of-network out-of-pocket calendar year limit will remain at $2,000 per individual/$4,000 per family (deductible and co-insurance).  NEW!!  Office visit co-pays and emergency room co-pays (all non-Rx copays) will be subject to a calendar year limit of $4,350 per individual/$8,700 per family effective January 1, 2014.

Prescription Drug Plan

Prescription drug copayments in Tiers 1, 2 and 3 will remain the same in 2014 (for 30 day supply at a retail pharmacy)

  • Tier 1 - $10 (generic) unchanged
  • Tier 2 - $30 (formulary brand named)
  • Tier 3 - $50 (non-formulary brand name)

Health Reimbursement Account (HRA)

Employees who elect coverage in the Bowdoin College Health Plan and whose salary is $43,000 or less are eligible for an HRA in 2014. 

Medical and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA)

Medical and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts are administered by Combined Services, LLC

  • Medical Flexible Spending Accounts:  The limit on Medical Flexible Spending Accounts is $2,500 per plan participant
    NEW!!  The "use it or lose it" provision for Medical FSAs was revised on October 31, 2013.  As a result, for the plan year beginning January 1, 2014, Bowdoin's plan will be amended to allow an employee to carry over up to $500 of an unused Medical FSA balance.   This amendment does not apply to Dependent Care FSAs.  
  • Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts: The limit for calendar year 2014 is $5,000 per household.

If you wish to participate in an FSA in 2014 you must actively enroll via HRforYOU by 5:00 p.m., Friday, November 15.    Medical and/or Dependent Care Flexible Spending accounts do not carry over from year to year.  If you do not have enough expenses in the calendar year to claim the entire amount from the FSA account (excluding the $500 amount allowed for a medical FSA rollover), you will forfeit the remaining balance at the end of the year, so be sure to plan carefully.

EyeMed Vision Plan

  • There are no changes to the plan for 2014.  Employee contributions remain the same.

Short Term Disability and Long Term Disability

Short Term Disability Insurance (STD)

NEW!!  Beginning January 1, 2014, our new short term disability insurance carrier will be Aetna.  STD provides income replacement if you are unable to work due to a non-work related illness or accident.  STD is available to all benefits eligible support staff and administrative staff with regular schedules of at least 30 hours per week including academic year employees.  Eligible employees will be automatically enrolled.  The College will pay 100% of the premium for all employees -- there is no charge to the employee.  Sensitive medical information will directed from your doctor to Aetna.

SUPPORT STAFF

  • Plan A and Plan B will be replaced by a single plan with a waiting period of 14 calendar days, paying 70% of the average weekly wage during a non-work related illness/accident for a period of up to 6 months. 
  • Available sick time can be used during the waiting period and after to potentially receive 100% of your wages – 30% in sick time through Bowdoin and 70% from Aetna.   
  • The maximum balance of sick time will be 480 hours for a full time employee (pro-rated for employees with part-time schedules).

ADMINISTRATIVE STAFF

  • The Plan pays 100% after a 14 calendar day waiting period.  Available sick time can be used during the waiting period.  
  • Pay and benefit deductions continue through regular Bowdoin payroll.
  • The maximum balance of sick time will be 480 hours for a full time employee (pro-rated for employees with part-time schedules).

FACULTY

  • A new STD plan is now available to all faculty appointed on at least a half-time basis.
  • The Plan pays 100% beginning on Day 1.
  • Pay and benefit deductions continue through regular Bowdoin payroll.

ATHLETIC COACHES, and LABORATORY INSTRUCTORS

  • A new STD plan is now available to all athletic coaches with an FTE of 0.75 – 1.0 and laboratory instructors with an FTE of 0.80 – 0.83.
  • The Plan pays 100% beginning on Day 1.
  • Pay and benefit deductions continue through regular Bowdoin payroll.

Long Term Disability Insurance (LTD)

Long Term Disability (LTD) insurance is available to all benefits-eligible full-time and part-time faculty and all benefits eligible support and administrative staff with regular schedules of at least 30 hours per week. 

NEW!!  LTD benefits pay 60% of your regular monthly earnings, on a tax-advantaged basis, if you are unable to work due to a non-work related illness or accident after a 6 month waiting period.  The College pays 100% of this plan.

To achieve tax-advantaged status, effective 1/1/2014, employees must pay taxes on the College’s contribution.  The contribution will go into the employee’s paycheck labeled “LTD” in the earnings section of the paystub.  The amount is taxed and then comes back out, appearing as “LTD” in the after-tax deductions section of the paystub.

Basic Life Insurance and Supplemental Life Insurance

Basic Life Insurance

  • You receive 2 times your annual salary life insurance coverage at no cost. 
  • The minimum amount of coverage is $50,000 and the maximum is $850,000.
  • Basic Life Insurance coverage reduces to 65% at age 65, 45% at age 70 and to $5,000 at age 75.

Supplemental Employee Life Insurance

  • Available in increments of 1 – 4 times your annual salary to a maximum of $350,000.  You pay 100% of the cost of supplemental employee life insurance.  The rates for supplemental life insurance increase with age and are based on your age as of each January 1st.  The costs specific to your age and salary are outlined for you on the enrollment page in HRforYou.
  • If you are at a milestone year, be sure to check the employee contribution for your new age range.  The change can be significant.
  • Coverage for Supplemental Employee Life can be increased by one increment during Open Enrollment.
  • Supplemental Employee Life Insurance coverage reduces to 65% at age 65, 45% at age 70 and to $5,000 at age 75.

Supplemental Dependent Life for a Spouse/Partner

  • Available in increments of $10,000 ($2.60 per month), $25,000 ($6.50 per month) and $50,000 ($13.00 per month).
  • Coverage for Supplemental Dependent Life can be increased by one increment during Open Enrollment.
  • PLEASE NOTE!!!  If you and spouse/partner are both employed and eligible for benefits at the College, you may NOT elect supplemental dependent life insurance for that dependent.

Supplemental Dependent Life for Child(ren)

  • Available in increments of $5,000 ($.60 per month) and $10,000 ($1.19 per month).
  • NEW!!  In order for your child to be eligible for Supplemental Dependent Life (s)he must be under age 26.
  • Coverage for Supplemental Dependent Life can be increased by one increment during Open Enrollment.
  • PLEASE NOTE!!!  If you and one of your dependent child(ren) are both employed and eligible for benefits at the College, you may NOT elect supplemental dependent life insurance for that dependent.


Beneficiary Updates
 

Open Enrollment is a great time of year to review and update your beneficiary designations for basic and supplemental life insurance elections and also for your retirement accounts through the College.  You can view/update your life insurance beneficiaries at any time during the year through HRforYou.
