BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College and Colby College softball teams split a NESCAC East Division doubleheader on Friday afternoon. The Polar Bears rallied to win game one, 4-3, before the Mules took game two, 5-4, in extra innings.
Bowdoin stands at 23-11 (5-7 NESCAC) while Colby is 10-13 (4-8).
Up 2-0 in the opening contest, Colby scored three times in the fourth inning to take the lead. Bowdoin rallied to score a pair of unearned runs in the fifth to take the lead for good, tying the game on a Courtney LaPierre RBI single and going ahead on a Colby throwing error that brought home Kaitee Daley. Karen Reni earned the win by tossing a complete game and striking out five as Emma Powers had two hits to lead the Polar Bears. Amanda Roehn allowed just two earned runs in six innings for Colby and also had two hits for the Mules.
Colby rebounded in game two after a dramatic Bowdoin comeback forced extra innings. A bases-loaded wild pitch by Carlie Minichino brought home Daley and Kate Chin to tie the game at four in the bottom of the sixth. Minichino made up for it in the eighth frame, hammering a deep home run to center to give the Mules the lead. She earned the win with 1.2 innings of relief work and Alyssa Crowell collected the save by working a 1-2-3 bottom of the eighth. Karen Reni took the loss in relief for the Polar Bears. Clare Ronan led the Bowdoin offense with two hits and two runs. Colby's Starr had two hits and two RBI's in the win.
