BIDDEFORD, Maine - The Bowdoin College softball team overcame an early 4-0 deficit for a 7-4 game-two win to earn a split of a non-conference doubleheader with the University of New England Tuesday afternoon at Claude Dubois Field.
UNE's Sarah Hamel had a two-out opposite-field RBI single to provide the Nor'easters with a 3-2 victory in game one.
Trailing 4-0 after an inning of the nightcap, Bowdoin would respond the very next inning with three runs. The Polar Bears took advantage of a pair of UNE errors, and Lauren Coven produced a run with a single to center. The visitors tied the game in the top of the sixth when Kate Chin led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. She would later advance to third on a UNE infield error, then score on a wild pitch.
Bowdoin put the game away with three runs in the seventh, once again taking advantage of two UNE errors, including a miscue that allowed the go-ahead run to score. Chin plated an insurance run with an RBI single.
Julia Jacobs earned the pitching win with six innings of one-hit relief. She walked two and struck out six in improving her record to 10-5. Offensively, Coven and Courtney LaPierre each had three hits to pace Bowdoin's 12-hit attack.
Besides providing the winning hit in game one, Hamel upped her pitching record to 11-5 with a solid performance. She allowed five hits and no earned runs while striking out nine and issuing no walks.
Bowdoin (22-9) returns to play Thursday with a single game at Colby College. First pitch is slated for 4:30 p.m.
