BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College softball team picked up a key NESCAC doubleheader sweep over Trinity on Saturday afternoon, winning game one 4-3 and game two 5-2. The Polar Bears improve to 17-7 (3-5 NESCAC) while the Bantams drop to 13-8 (7-2).
Bowdoin scraped together four hits against Trinity's pitching but took advantage of three Bantam errors in the one-run victory. Trailing 3-1 entering the sixth inning, Trinity rallied to tie the game on a two-run double by Katherine Stoltenberg. Shavonne Lord walked to start the bottom of the sixth frame, and consecutive errors by the Bantam infield brought her around the score, giving the hosts a 4-3 edge. Karen Reni, who scattered 10 hits and allowed one earned run, collected the win for Bowdoin. Kristen Anderson was tagged with the loss in relief despite not allowing an earned run for Trinity.
The Polar Bears rallied in game two of the doubleheader to complete the sweep. Down 2-0 entering the fourth, Bowdoin posted a four-spot to claim the lead. Molly Nestor led off with a single and was plated when Alison Coleman hammered a game-tying two-run homer. Two batters later, Courtney LaPierre came home on a double from Lauren Coven to give Bowdoin a 3-2 lead. Shavonne Lord took a bases-loaded walk later in the frame to make it 4-2 and connected for a sacrifice fly in the sixth to make it 5-2. Anderson was tagged for her second loss of the day for Trinity, allowing four earned runs. Julia Jacobs got the win for Bowdoin with eight strikeouts in seven innings.
