BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Trinity College softball team defeated Bowdoin College 7-5 in the 2008 home opener for the Polar Bears. Trinity, who rapped 11 hits on the day, improve to 13-6 (7-0 NESCAC) while the Polar Bears dip to 15-7 (1-5).
The Bantams scored three times in the first inning and never relinquished the lead, despite a late Bowdoin rally. Jessica Tait ripped a triple off the center field wall to open the game and Katherine Stolterberg connected for a double to plate Tait with the game's first run. Two batters later, Ariana blasted a two-run homer to left- her third of the season- to give the Bantams an early edge. The Bantams added a run in the second inning before a Bowdoin rally cut into their advantage. Lauren Coven scored Clare Ronan with an RBI single in the bottom of the second before a Molly Nester groundout scored Kaitee Daley in the third. An Alison Coleman groundball scored Shavonne Lord later in the inning to make it 4-3 Trinity.
The Bantams were able to tack on three more runs with single runs in the fourth, fifth and seven innings, however, to seal the win. Trinity was led by three hits and three runs scored by Stolterberg. Gabrielle Sergi (8-4) earned her eighth win of the season with 6.0 innings and two earned runs as Trinity committed three errors. Kristen Anderson (1) nailed down the save with a perfect ninth.
Bowdoin's offense was paced by three hits from Lord. Clare Ronan scored twice, while Coven collected two RBI's. Julia Jacobs (7-4) went the distance, allowing seven runs in the loss.
The teams will attempt to play a doubleheader at Bowdoin on Saturday beginning at noon, weather permitting. For the latest scheduling information, visit the Bowdoin Athletics website or call the Polar Bear Sports Hotline (207) 725-3061.
