BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College softball team swept the University of Maine-Farmington in a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon, 6-0 and 10-5. The Polar Bears improve to 19-7 this season while the Beavers drop their first games of the season and stand at 6-2.Bowdoin pitcher Julia Jacobs was dominant in game one, tossing a complete-game shutout in a 6-0 victory. The Polar Bear starter allowed just four hits and struck out five in seven innings for her ninth win of the season. Bowdoin rapped out 12 hits against Beaver starter Meagen Carman (0-1), scoring twice in the first inning on RBI singles from Alison Coleman and Lauren Coven. Bowdoin added four in the third frame with the key blow coming on a two-run single from Shavonne Lord, who had a team-high three hits in the game.
The Polar Bears never trailed in game two, plating four unearned runs in the first inning and taking advantage of eight Farmington errors in the victory. Clare Ronan had a pair of hits, including a grand slam in the sixth inning to seal the win. Karen Reni moved to 9-3 on the season by scattering 10 hits, allowing three earned runs. Jessica Timmreck (0-1) was tagged with the loss despite allowing just four earned runs. Lauren Overlock and McKell Barnes had two hits apiece for the Beavers while Caitlin Flaherty had two RBI's. Kaitee Daley keyed the Bowdoin attack with two hits and three runs.
