MEDFORD, Mass. - Bates College and Bowdoin College split a doubleheader Sunday in NESCAC East Division softball matchup played at Tufts University, with Bates as the home team. Bowdoin crushed Bates 17-1 in five innings in Game 1, before Bates took the second game 5-0 for the Bobcats' first win this season.
Bowdoin (15-6, 1-4 NESCAC East) banged out 12 hits in Game 1, including three by Molly Nestor, who drove in five runs. Alison Coleman hit a two-run home run to punctuate a nine-run fifth inning that allowed the Polar Bears to claim a mercy-rule victory. Julia Jacobs went five innings to pick up the win, raising her record to 7-2.
Bates (1-10, 1-4 NESCAC East) came back in the second game with a complete-game shutout by first-year pitcher Sarah Cullen, who scattered four hits and a walk while striking out two over seven innings. Cullen also went 2-3 at the plate with a run scored and two RBIs. Junior Stacia Saniuk went 3-4 in the game as Bates rapped out a season-high 10 hits.
Jacobs again started and took the loss for the Polar Bears to drop to 7-3. Molly Nestor and Jessica Paris each had two hits, while Cullen held the rest of the Bowdoin lineup hitless.
Bowdoin next scheduled contest is against Maine-Farmington- a game that has been moved to Brunswick and is slated for Thursday, April 10 at 3:30.
