MEDFORD, Mass. - The Bowdoin College baseball team swept rival Colby in a NESCAC doubleheader on Sunday at Tufts University. The Polar Bears (10-6, 2-3 NESCAC) claimed game one 9-0 before taking game two 9-3 over the Mules (8-4, 0-2).
Bowdoin was in command from the first pitch of the opening contest, thanks to an outstanding performance by sophomore pitcher Carter Butland. Butland tossed a complete-game (seven inning) shutout, allowing just seven hits and striking out six for the victory. The Polar Bears would get all the scoring they would need in the opening frame, as a three-run homer from Pat Duchette highlighted the inning. Jason Koperniak went 2-2 with 3 RBI's while Kevin Zikaras also had two hits. Joe Berte reached base three times and scored three runs.
Game two was the tighter contest, as Bowdoin carried a two-run lead into the sixth thanks to a first-inning RBI single by Pat Duchette and an unearned run. Colby rallied to tie the game in the top of the sixth, only to see Bowdoin score three times to go ahead for good in the bottom of the frame. A Kevin Zikaras double was followed by another Duchette RBI single and Bowdoin tacked on a pair of unearned runs later in the inning. Bowdoin would tack on four more runs, including a two-run jack by Zikaras in the seventh, to put the game out of reach. Ryan Turgeon went five innings and allowed two earned runs in a no-decision. Luke Potter earned the victory with an inning of scoreless relief. Pat Driscoll shut the door with a scoreless eighth and ninth for the Polar Bears.
