BRUNSWICK, Maine - The National Championship-winning Bowdoin College field hockey squad has been honored for its work in the classroom in academic honors handed out by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association. The Polar Bears, who won the Division III National Championship last autumn, placed eight individuals on the National Academic Squad while also earning a National Academic Team Award.
All three senior captains from the 2007 team (pictured)- Hillary Hoffman (Greenwood Village, Colo.), Meaghan Maguire (Wolfeboro, N.H.) and Val Young (Concord, N.H.)- earned Academic All-American status, while teammates Michaela Calnan (Melrose, Mass.), Tamlyn Frederick (Dover-Foxcroft, Maine), Kate Gormley (Chestnut Hill, Mass.), Megan McCullough (Springvale, Maine) and Kristen Veiga (Concord, N.H.) also collected individual honors for exceeding a 3.3 GPA during the fall semester.
As a team, Bowdoin also exceeded the 3.0 cumulative GPA for the fall semester to garner a National Academic Team award. The Polar Bears were one of nine NESCAC schools to earn the Academic Team honor; a group that included Amherst, Bates, Colby, Connecticut College, Trinity, Tufts, Wesleyan and Williams.
