DURHAM, New Hampshire - Bowdoin finished exactly where they were supposed to this weekend at UNH, losing to teams seeded higher than them and defeating teams seeded lower. On March 31st, Bowdoin went 1-3 in pool play with losses to #2 Maine, #4 St. John's, and #6 WPI, but defeating #10 Colby. With this finish, the Polar Bears qualified for the Elite Eight for only the second time in school history (the first time being last season, where the team had to upset two teams to get there).
On April 1st, Bowdoin was matched up against #1 Fairfield and came away with a near loss. Following this defeat in the semi-finals, the Polar Bears were sent to the consolation bracket where they played a dogfight of a match against #9 Siena and lost despite scoring more points (1-2 with scores of 23-25, 25-16, 14-16). With this defeat, Bowdoin was eliminated and was awarded seventh place in the league--the tie with St. John's broken by point differential--the second best finish in school history after the last season's 5th place finish.
This season Bowdoin graduates captain and outside hitter Justin Strasburger, setter Jordan Krechmer, and libero Cait Polistena. All three will be missed, but the team is looking forward to returning lots of talent next season and a much more experienced squad than they had this season. The team will look to make history with a top four finish and thereby vault into the top echelon of teams in New England.
