Bowdoin To Host "Phil Soule 5K Phlail"

BRUNSWICK, Maine - Bowdoin College is pleased to announce the first-ever "Phil Soule 5K Phlail" in honor of the longtime coach at the school. The race is scheduled for the Sunday of Homecoming Weekend, October 22, with all proceeds benefitting Bowdoin's Philip H. Soule Memorial Fund.

The race is slated for a 10:00 start at Whittier Field with registration scheduled for 9:00 a.m. that morning. The course will begin at the Magee-Saumuelson track at Whittier Field and wind through the roads adjacent to the Stadium. It will conclude back at Whittier Field after a running finish through the Bowdoin pines. A complete map of the course will be available at registration on Sunday morning. Awards will be given out in male and female categories for the following age groups: Junior High, High School, College, 22-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59 and 60 & over. In addition, there will be a special category to recognize the first three Bowdoin Lineman Alumni to finish, in honor of Coach Soule.

Phil Soule coached football at Bowdoin College for 39 years. He was an assistant coach in lacrosse, squash and track in addition to football, and served as a head coach for the baseball and wrestling teams. His earlier players nicknamed Phil "Boulder." After his untimely death in January of 2006, former players and friends contributed to a memorial "Boulder" which will be dedicated at Whittier Field following the 5K run. One of the founders of the Maine Rowdies running club, Phil was a competitive runner. Marathons, Ultra-marathons and Triathlons were his favorite. It was Phil's philosophy to live each day to its fullest. The intent of today's 5K "Phlail" is to live up to that belief.
