BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's basketball team won their sixth-straight NESCAC crown on Sunday in Lewiston and have been rewarded with Co-Player of the Week honors. Senior captain Justine Pouravelis (Old Orchard Beach, Maine - left in photo) and sophomore Marisa Berne (Falmouth, Maine - right), both of Catherine McAuley High School, shared the conference's weekly honor thanks to their outstanding play in both of last weekend's games.
The Polar Bears (24-2) are ranked sixth in the latest national poll and will host an NCAA First and Second-Round Regional this weekend in Brunswick. Bowdoin will play in the second game of a doubleheader (7:00 p.m.) on Friday against Colby-Sawyer College, while Brandeis and Salem State will tip-off at 5:00 p.m. The winners will meet for a berth in the Sectionals on Saturday afternoon at 5:00 p.m.
Berne and Pouravelis combined stellar performances to give Bowdoin the 2006 NESCAC Women?s Basketball Championship. In Saturday?s semifinal against Wesleyan, Berne scored 12 points while Pouravelis collected eight points, grabbed 12 rebounds and dished out four assists. During Sunday?s championship match at Bates, Berne was key in the decisive second half run with a game-high 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Pouravelis had 10 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and three steals.
