Bowdoin Men's Volleyball takes Second in DII North

BRUNSWICK, Maine - Bowdoin men's volleyball team won second place on Saturday, February 11th in the North Division of DII NECVL play. The win was the result of the breaking of a three-way tie with Bates and UMaine-Orono. All three teams won four matches and lost two, though by tie breaking procedures Bowdoin placed second because they earned more points than Bates and UMO in tournament play. Plymouth State University took first with a perfect 6-0 record.

In the first divisional tournament of the season, February 5th, Bowdoin came away with first place in the pool, an NECVL record of 2-1, and an overall record to 3-3. They defeated University of Maine with a 2-1 victory (21-25, 25-17, 15-8), lost to host Bates 2-1 (13-25, 25-23, 12-15), and finished with a resounding victory over conference rival Colby 2-0 (25-21, 25-15). These victories, coupled with a key loss of Bates to U-Maine, secured a first place finish for Bowdoin in their pool.

In the second divisional tournament on February 11th, Bowdoin went 2-1 again. They started with a victory over the University of Southern Maine 2-1 (20-25, 25-8, 15-10). However, in their second match the team lost to perennial North Division champion Plymouth State 2-0 (12-25, 17-25). NECVL's pre-season ranking placed Plymouth fourth (Bowdoin was ranked seventh). Since then Plymouth has improved to third while Bowdoin has remained seventh. Bowdoin rounded out the day with a hard-fought victory over host UNE with score 2-1 (25-12, 27-29, 15-12). In the NECVL pre-season ranking, UNE was ranked seventh (tied with Bowdoin). Since then, UNE has fallen out of the Elite Eight ranking.

Bowdoin will go into Interdivisional play (to be held February 26th at UMass-Lowell) with confidence as they face off against Hartford, UMass-Lowell, Stonehill, and Brown. Bowdoin will need to bring home a better record than UMO and Bates to qualify for the playoffs to be held on April 8th and 9th.
