BOSTON, Massachusetts - The Bowdoin Men's Volleyball team opened their season on Sunday, January 29th at the Marty Open Tournament at MIT. The Marty has traditionally given the Polar Bears trouble as it has featured teams ranging from club to D1 level play. The Polar Bears defeated Vermont University 2-1, lost to Rhode Island University 2-0, and lost to Roger Williams University 2-1 in a hard fought match.
In the first match of the day vs. Rhode Island, the Polar Bears saw strong performances from senior Captain Henry Brennan with 17 assists and from first-year middles Jeff Jeng (7 kills) and David White (7 kills). The Polar Bears lost 25-17 and 27-25.
The second match of the day netted the Polar Bears their first win (against Vermont) in a three game thriller. The Polar Bears were led by the efforts of sophomore Felix Jaeckel with 13 digs out of the libero position, as well as a strong offence with Jeff Jeng (7 kills, 4 blocks), Henry Brennan (7 kills, 18 assists, 7 digs), and David White (8 kills, 7 digs, 5 blocks).
Bowdoin rounded out the day with a heart-breaking loss to Roger Williams (21-25, 25-17, 9-15). The Polar Bears were led by Jeff Jeng (11 kills, 4 blocks), Henry Brennan (9 kills, 5 blocks), David White (9 kills, 5 blocks), and senior Captain and outside hitter Ely Delman (6 kills).
The squad was also helped throughout the day by the strong serving of senior right-side hitter Brandon Parise (8 aces on the day) and Ely Delman, as well as the high hitting percentages of junior outside hitter Justin Strasburger and senior Ely Delman. The Polar Bears come away from the Marty ready to start regular season play with matches against conference rivals Bates, Colby, and USM on February 5th at Bates.
