BRUNSWICK, Maine - Both Bowdoin College hockey teams are ranked in preseason national polls released by U.S. College Hockey Online, the nation's top source for collegiate hockey information. The Polar Bear women are ranked seventh in the nation, while the men stand 10th overall in the first polls of 2005-06. Winter sports teams begin practice on Tuesday, November 1.
The women's squad is coming off their fourth-straight NCAA Tournament apperance following a 2004-05 campaign that saw the Polar Bears finish with a 20-5-1 mark. At one point during last season, the Polar Bears rolled off 16 straight victories and peaked at number four in the USCHO.com poll. The women's squad returns an abundance of firepower, as six of their top seven scorers return from a year ago, led by top-scorer Meghan Gillis and starting netminder Cat MacEachern. Bowdoin will open their 2005-06 season at home on November 18 against Amherst College.
The men's team is ranked 10th in the preseason following a 17-6-3 year that saw them reach the NESCAC finals and finish the campaign at number nine in the USCHO.com rankings. The Polar Bears, who received one first-place vote in the poll, are loaded for the upcoming year, returning 81% of their goal-scoring output from last year, including their top three point-getters Adam Dann, Bryan Ciborowski and Jon Landry. In addition, All-NESCAC goaltender George Papachristopoulos returns for his senior season. The Polar Bears open on the road this year, on November 18 at UMass-Boston.
