BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's basketball team is ranked third in D3Hoops.com's Preseason Top 25 Poll. The Polar Bears are coming off a 26-3 campaign that saw them reach the NCAA's 'Elite Eight' for the fourth straight year- the best of any team in Division III women's basketball. Defending national champion Millikin is ranked first in the poll, followed by Randolph-Macon, the Polar Bears, Southern Maine and Scranton in the rankings compiled by the nation's most respected Division III hoops source.
"The ranking of teams at the top is interesting," according to head coach Stefanie Pemper. "Bowdoin and Randolph-Macon appear to have snuck in there with less first-place votes than Southern Maine. All I know is six of the top 17 teams are from New England and three of them are on our schedule. Williams was slighted in this ranking but they'll use that as motivation."
The Polar Bears have won five straight NESCAC Championships and have won 55 consecutive home games- the longest streak in NCAA basketball. Bowdoin, who always play a challenging schedule, will open their 2005 campaign at Eastern Connecticut State university's Season-Opening Tip-Off Tournament on November 19. The Polar Bears draw Endicott in their season-opening game on November 19. The Polar Bears begin practice, as per NESCAC regulations on Tuesday, November 1.
"With the Final Four in New England it will undoubtedly be a wild year in our region," comments Pemper. "It's exciting, I love my team and we can't wait to get going. We have a ton of experience and toughness and are very hungry."
