BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's basketball team finished the 2004-05 season with a 26-3 mark and their fifth straight NESCAC Championship. The Polar Bears proved to be just as excellent in the classroom last season, ranking 20th in the WBCA's Academic Honor Roll.
The Polar Bears were the only team among last season's NCAA Tournament "Elite Eight" squads to be on the list released by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association.
The Women's Basketball Coaches Association Academic Honor Roll was established in 1996 to recognize outstanding academic performance. Team grade point averages are determined by the total number of quality points divided by the total number of hours attempted by the team. Grades must be converted to a 4.000 grade point scale and only semester hours or quarter hours can be accepted.
Bowdoin's Team GPA number of 3.352 placed them 20th in the nation and tops among schools in the New England Small College Athletic Conference.
"I'm very proud of the diligence last year's team showed toward their studies," comments head coach Stefanie Pemper. "Grade point average doesn't reflect all the important factors in a healthy educational experience but it does reflect key ones. Our players traditionally do a great job making their academic interests their top priority but there's a real connection between their commitment to the success of our team and their strong academic performance. The goal is to give your best to everything you do and be proud of how you represent yourself."
