BRUNSWICK, Maine - Bowdoin College has named Scheherazade Fowler as head coach of the Polar Bear sailing program.
The daughter of a sailmaker, Sherry grew up racing boats of all sizes. She sailed at Yale, and went with the Women's team to Nationals three out of her four years there. She has coached junior sailors, adult beginners, and Special Olympics athletes, and is looking forward to her first opportunity to coach college racers.
"I love helping sailors get better. I love the sport, and no other kind of competitive sailing can approach the intensity and richness of college competition. College racers have the chance to face great competition every weekend, to master several different kinds of boats, and to make great friends who they'll sail with and against for the rest of their lives."
Sherry owns an Etchells that she races in Portland, and is the Race Committee Chair at Portland Yacht Club. Besides college dinghy experience, she has extensive experience racing J/24s, J/29s, J/35s in one-design competition, and has raced a range of larger boats in offshore, point-to-point, and round-the-buoys events. She is also an experienced race organizer, and has been a principal race officer for large one-design and multiple division events.
"Bowdoin has a first-class sailing facility in one of the most beautiful spots in New England. The team has a strong regatta schedule. I'm delighted to be part of the program."
