BRUNSWICK, Maine - For a school with a deep history of athletic success, saying that anything is "unprecedented" is unusual. But unprecedented is the only word that can describe the kind of success that is being enjoyed by three teams at Bowdoin College this winter. The women's basketball team (13-0), the women's hockey team (13-1) and the men's hockey team (11-0-3) are all off to best-ever starts in their respective program's history and are among the top teams in the nation according to the latest national polls released this week.
The women's basketball team is currently on a school-record 13-game winning streak, and is off to the best start in the school's history. At 13-0, the Polar Bears sit at number four in the latest national poll, the highest ranking ever by a Bowdoin College women's basketball team. With four of their five starters hailing from Maine, the Polar Bears are averaging nearly 70 points per game, and are holding their opponents to an average of 48.2. Bowdoin will make their first road trip of the NESCAC season this weekend, traveling to play at Middlebury on Friday and Williams on Saturday.
The women's ice hockey team is also enjoying an outstanding start to the winter season, as they sit at number two in the latest national poll with a 13-1 overall record. The team is oustcoring opponents 72-17 this year, and their only loss came earlier in the season to top-ranked Middlebury. The Polar Bears will host two games this weekend, against Amherst on Friday and Hamilton on Saturday.
The men's ice hockey program has been in existence at Bowdoin since 1919. Never before has a Bowdoin men's ice hockey team been undefeated 14 games into the season. Yet, the Polar Bears at 11-0-3 this season are setting records and sit at number six in the latest national poll. Bowdoin is the only undefeated team remaining in Division III men's ice hockey. They will face a tough test this weekend when they travel to play at Trinity and Wesleyan on Friday and Saturday.
