Berne Takes Honors as Bowdoin Regains Top Spot

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's basketball team regained the top spot in the National Poll, while rookie Marisa Berne (Falmouth, Maine) earned regional honors for her performance last week in a pair of Polar Bear wins. Bowdoin (12-1) returns to action Tuesday night at Ithaca College.

Berne took co-NESCAC Player of the Week and earned the MWBCA (Maine Women's Basketball Coaches Association) Rookie of the Week as she averaged 13.0 points in two victories against regionally-ranked teams. She went 5-7 from three-point range and scored a team-high 17 points as the second-ranked Polar Bears dealt ninth-ranked Bates their first loss of the season. For the weekend, Berne was 8-11 from three-point range as Bowdoin extended their home winning streak to 49 games.

The Polar Bears, after a one-week respite, took 11 first-place votes to regain the top slot in the national poll. In a week full of upsets in the top ten, Bowdoin rose from second to first and is ranked ahead of two unbeaten teams, Messiah (14-0) and Brandeis (12-0).
