Women's Basketball Ranked First In Preseason Poll

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's basketball team, who finished last season with a 30-1 mark and second-place finish in the NCAA Tournament, has been ranked first in the Preseason National Poll released on Wednesday evening.

The Polar Bears, who begin their 2004-05 campaign at the University of Rochester Tournament (Nov. 19-20), have won 44 consecutive home games and four straight NESCAC Championships. The Polar Bears grabbed their first-ever number one national ranking in the poll on January 27 last season and remained in the top spot until falling to Wilmington (Ohio) in the National Championship game. Bowdoin returns four of five starters from last years' squad.

The University of Southern Maine, who Bowdoin defeated in the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Tournament, is ranked second in the poll. The Polar Bears will play the Huskies in their home-opener on November 30. Bowdoin received 14 of a possible 25 first-place votes in the poll. NATIONAL POLL
