Lacrosse Teams Ranked In National Polls

BRUNSWICK, Maine - Both the Bowdoin men's and women's lacrosse teams are ranked in the latest national polls released on Monday. The men have cracked the top ten for the first time all season and are number nine in the USILA poll, while the women stand at number 15 in the IWLCA rankings.

The men's team is off to their best start ever under head coach Tom McCabe, beginning the season 6-0. It is the furthest into a season that the Polar Bears have been unbeaten since Mort LaPointe's 1989 squad began the year 13-0. Two-time NESCAC Player of the Week Connor Fitzgerald leads Bowdoin this season and is second in the conference, averaging 5.33 points per game and leads the league with 18 assists on the campaign. As a team, Bowdoin is scoring an average of 12.5 goals per game and is allowing just 6.83 goals per contest. The Polar Bears are one of four NESCAC teams in the top-twenty this week.

The women's team stands at 15th in the nation after a 7-2 start to their year. Liz Grote's squad had won six straight until being tripped up at Williams on Sunday. During the six-game stretch, the Polar Bears outscored opponents 77-33 (an average score of 12.8-5.5). Bowdoin has been succeeding with defense, as goalkeeper Kendall Cox stands second in the NESCAC in goals-against-average (5.62). Bowdoin's scoring defense is also second in the conference at 6.48 goals per game. Further reinforcing the strength of the NESCAC, five league teams are ranked in the top 15 in the nation this week.
