BRUNSWICK, Maine - As the Bowdoin College men's ice hockey team secured the third-seed for the upcoming NESCAC Tournament this past weekend, members of the Polar Bears' first-ever Championship squad were honored on Alumni Day at Dayton Arena. Four players from Bowdoin's 1954 New England Championship squad were recognized during the first intermission of the Polar Bears 4-1 win over Amherst College.
The 1953-54 Bowdoin College men's ice hockey team was named New England Champions after the completion of a 6-2-1 season. Notice of the championship vote did not reach Bowdoin until well after the team's six seniors had graduated, and no formal recognition was ever given at Bowdoin to their accomplishment. This winter, marking the 50th anniversary of their accomplishment, Bowdoin honors their success.
The team was: David F. Coe '55, Paul S. Doherty '56, Lawrence E. Dwight '54, William H. Freeman '56, Robert P. Hazzard III '54, Charles W. Howard II '54, Denis W. King '55, Richard T. McCabe '54, David R. Melincoff '54, Frank A. Metz Jr. '55, Peter M. Pirnie '55, Peter J. Rigby '56, David S. Rogerson '54 (Captain), Jack W. Swenson '55, and Coach Daniel N. MacFayden.
