BRUNSWICK, Maine - On Saturday, February 14, the women athletes at Bowdoin College will sponsor a day long celebration in honor of the 18th Annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day. The day will be filled with free activities and events for girls and boys of all ages to honor the achievements and celebrate the participation of girls and women in sports.
The celebration kicks off with breakfast at 9:30am featuring an informal discussion with Jean Mayo who was involved when athletics for women evolved here at Bowdoin. This is open to all members of the community and will be held in Lancaster Lounge in Bowdoin's Moulton Union. Breakfast can be purchased for $5 and no reservations are required.
From 11am to 1pm, girls from kindergarten through high school are invited to Sargeant Gym to participate in mini SPORTS CLINICS. Girls will have the opportunity to visit stations devoted to numerous sports to learn the basics or polish their skills with the Bowdoin women athletes. Girls can learn more about basketball, field hockey, ice hockey, golf, volleyball, rowing, lacrosse, rugby, soccer, softball, squash, track & field, tennis, and ultimate frisbee. All equipment will be provided.
After learning new skills at the mini clinics, girls will have the chance to compete in a DECATHLON at 1:00pm. Events include bouncing a tennis ball, running a lap, throwing a softball, shooting a basket, dribbling a soccer ball, doing the long jump, and more.
After the decathlon, girls and boys of all ages can cheer on the Bowdoin women's basketball team as they take on Colby at 2pm and the women's hockey team as they play Middlebury at 3pm. Girls are welcome to participate in all or part of the day's events and all participants in the mini sports clinics or decathlon will receive a T-shirt and certificate. All of the events are free of charge and open to girls of all ages. Girls wearing their 'Girls and Women in Sports Day' T-shirts will receive a free drink at the concessions stand during the Bowdoin women's games on Saturday.
