BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's ice hockey team is ranked in the top ten in the nation, while the men's squad is ranked just outside the top-15 in preseason rankings released today by U.S. College Hockey Online.
The women's ice hockey team is coming off the most successful year in the program's history, posting a 23-2-3 mark and a third-place finish in the NCAA Tournament. Due to a talented senior class that graduated last spring, the Polar Bears will begin the year ranked sixth in the nation as two-time defending champion Elmira takes the top spot. Among NESCAC schools, the Polar Bears are the second highest, behind Middlebury (ranked third) and ahead of Williams (ranked eighth).
The men's ice hockey team is ranked as the second team outside the USCHO's Top-15 ranking. The Polar Bears received 21 votes in the poll, placing them 17th. Defending champion Norwich begins the year ranked number one, while NESCAC brethren Middlebury (4th) and Trinity (10th) are ranked.
Both teams open their season on Friday, November 21. The women play at Middlebury, while the men host New England College.
