BRUNSWICK, Maine - Bowdoin College senior women's squash player Merrill Muckerman (St. Louis, Mo.) capped off a tremendously successful run in the Halloran Division of the CSA Individual Nationals with a victory on Sunday in the championship final.
Muckerman (left in picture), seeded sixth overall in the "B" division, cruised through the first two rounds before taking an impressive win over 12th-seeded Roopali Agarwal (4-9; 9-5; 10-8; 9-0) in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, she pulled an upset over third seed Meridy Volmer after falling behind (8-10; 9-5; 10-8; 10-8). In the championship final she made short work of top seed Ashley Harmeling, sweeping the win (9-7; 9-3; 10-9).
"Merrill's performance was outstanding not only for the magnificent results but for the way they were achieved," according to Head Coach Tomas Fortson. "She closed out her collegiate career by playing her best squash to date and her victory in the semifinals over the Trinity player was nothing short of amazing. Of the six games Merrill won in the semis and finals, she was trailing late in five of them. Her perseverance and tough competitive spirit were second to none and made her a deserving National Champion."
